My top 5 tips for being home during Lockdown

Image – Pinterest Dream Dash Journal

More and more of  us  are having to move to home working or might even be on extended leave from work as we battle  Covid 19.   We are finding ourselves having to create a new normal for ourselves during this time . I hoped these 5 tips might help even a couple of you , if you are struggling being out of your normal routine , and/or working from home for the first time ,  these are things that have helped me so much , I worked from home the past 6 years of doing my Travel job and I remember those first few weeks were a little weird as I got used to it.  I then had to create a whole new routine for myself at the end of 2018, when I left my Travel job to focus on Mis-Fit full time!,.

  1. Create a Routine for yourself
  • create a morning routine you can stick with – don’t overwhelm yourself and make it too complex,  keep it simple  . Maybe it’s getting up, putting your workout clothes on and doing a workout straight away . Maybe it’s starting your day with a meditation.   Maybe it’s as simple as hopping straight in the shower and getting dressed for the day , sitting down to have breakfast . Maybe it’s listening to an uplifting, positive podcast to get you ready for the day ahead.  Create your own routine and stick with it – Especially Monday – Friday .  Often there is a commute to work , or a whole family to get ready to head out the door. At the moment you probably don’t have that, so use that extra time productively- don’t just lounge about! Set yourself a purpose to get up and greet the day ahead like  Pollyanna would  – with positivity  – also who else LOVED that film? 😄.
  1. Move your body
  • do an at home workout,  go for a walk/Run , take the dog for a walk , maybe do some stretches. , maybe stick the radio on in the kitchen or play some music through your phone and have a little bop about – just  move your body  daily.  You’ll feel so much better physically and mentally.
  1. Get ready!

Now we all love a pyjama day and let’s face it , every once in a while it is like therapy . However living in your pyjamas every day during Covid 19 is NOT  going to help you feel motivated.  So get up and get dressed , even if it is into comfy clothes if you are working out or doing jobs around the house .   Just get out of your pyjamas and get ready for the day.  It will put you in productive mode . Doing your hair and Makeup will also help you feel more in work mode. Plus we have extra time , to practice playing around with our makeup 😄. Makeup goal – perfect that winged liner!!! Or is that just mine?? 😂.  I can spend many a happy hour watching makeup videos on YouTube

  1. Create an inspiring Working Space

If you are working from home , create a workspace for yourself that in the vibe of Marie Kondo Sparks the joy, don’t have it all cluttered and messy , I use my 3rd bedroom as an office and I’ve made it pretty  . I know its not always possible to have an actual room dedicated to being just an office space but even if you are working from the kitchen table ,  maybe light a favourite candle as you work, just create a little ambiance 💕.  I also find it useful to set the timer on my phone to tackle certain tasks – sometimes I’ll set it for an hour , I call it my power hour and I will see how much I can get done in that hour if I put my head (and phone down 😂) .  I even use this method for housework chores too , I just find once I get started , I get in the zone – it’s just sometimes motivating myself  to make that initial start , especially if you have a long to do list, it can feel overwhelming, but setting myself that hour , often has me continuing longer, but even if not or I have to go do something else, I got more done then if I sat procrastinating over it! .

For something like planning class sessions, I might set my timer for 45 mins and focus on that and then give myself 10 minutes to clear my head. Just find something what works for you .

  1. keep a Positive Mindset

Surround yourself with Positivity and lessen the amount of negativity you allow around you.  Unfollow those drama Llamas on Social Media – we all know at least one 😂.   Up until these past few weeks, I rarely had the news on,   I would keep up to date with the headlines on the radio so I could keep up to date with what was going on in the world without getting caught up in it all.  The past few weeks of course, we need to know what is going on .  I tune into the daily press conference every afternoon and I might check the headlines on BBC on my phone on the morning, but that is it as far as news is concerned. The rest of the time I prefer to stick with listening to my favourite podcasts  and country hits radio. – don’t judge,  I really love it! 😂,  and reading  or listening to things that inspire and motivate me and obviously watching my favourite YouTubers talking makeup, style and home decor . Just immerse yourself in the things that bring you joy.

Of course we are going to have moments in the coming days and weeks ahead and indeed throughout life where we feel scared, overwhelmed, anxious and that is absolutely ok , sit with those feelings, acknowledge them , but don’t allow yourself to stay there for long . Find what cheers you up and makes you feel better – a chat with someone who lifts you up , or a favourite movie/TV show – I mean even if it’s a Christmas film, stick it on – total feel good right there. Read books – one of my absolute favourites I read at the end of last year was girl wash your face by Rachel Hollis, I highly recommend it!.

Just embrace this time though as long as we all come through this healthy that is what matters and use this time to reflect, recharge , to learn new skills, have a good declutter, keep fit and healthy, and work on that positive mindset  💕🌈

What will be your word for this New Year?

Can you believe we are getting ready to say goodbye to 2018! I mean I honestly feel like I just said Hello! 😳. Is anyone else feeling the same?

The past couple of years rather than making New  Year resolutions, I have opted to choose a word or a theme of how I want my year to look. For some they may chose the word calm as they want to bring more calm into their life or maybe its health, if you want to make your health and well-being a priority this year . Maybe you want to travel lots in 2019 so maybe Travel could be yours . You could even have more than one!, you make your own rules 💕.

For 2018 , my theme was Building my Dream , I wanted to focus on working towards making my dream of taking Mis Fit full time and in November of this year , I did just that! 😋.

I’m currently in a business group – the  Dream life Academy programme and as part of that, we each had to come up with our hashtag  for the year when we started back in September. I opted for a bit of only fools and horses inspiration and went with the #  she who dares! , so I am going to stick with that as we go into 2019. A reminder to stay brave , especially when stepping outside my comfort zone as that is most often the time when you find the magic! 💕.  A reminder for myself to always reach for the moon , because even if you don’t quite reach the moon , you’ll still land among the stars 💕.

My boyfriend and actually some friends and family have also suggested I may need to learn the art of chilling out/relaxing a bit more 😂, so I guess my theme of 2019 is to work hard but also to ensure I  make the time to play too.

This past year I got to travel more , which  I loved especially as I hadn’t had the chance  to do much the past couple years and it’s something I used to do a lot more of , so definitely hoping for a couple more adventures in 2019 and I already have a couple fun trips booked 😀. It’s my 40th birthday so plenty of celebrations!.

What about you guys? I’d love to hear what your word / theme for 2019 is? Let me know in the comments below 💕

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy 2019!. May it be filled with love, laughter and Adventure.

Self Care Summer!

Hi Guys,

Happy June! , so Summer is just about here. Who else is excited??.   Mind as I write this currently , its chucking it down and I definitely heard thunder just now!! – so yep its British summer time alright lol.  Though we have had some glorious sunshine of late so I can handle a little rain, and hey my little garden plants will be happy anyways – silver linings!.

I love Summer, I mean you guys know I absolutely  love Christmas but I also love summer (and Autumn too ) .  We always think of Christmas as been a really busy time of year, but honestly I find Summer is just as hectic – there is so much  always going on – holidays to take, nights out, impromtu afternoon drinks , Day trips out,  lovely long summer days to enjoy,

Juggling work plus  taking care of our loved ones  and balancing a social life though can feel so overwhelming at times. I speak to so many of you who feel like they are juggling so many plates and its exhausting and can really have an effect our mental health and  well being  , This can often manifest itself in our physical bodies . For example when I get run down , a lot of you know I suffer sore throats and can lose my voice. For one friend she gets really bad ear ache. others it might manifest as  back pain  , or maybe migranes/tension headaches.    It may be that you just feel so drained and don’t really have the energy to do anything . My friend Marita bought me  the Fearne Cotton book – Happy for my Birthday and its really good!. full of lots of useful tips and tricks for finding the Joy in  everyday life. if you haven’t read it, definitely check it out.

New Year Self Care Challenge!

“Self Care is giving the world the best version of you, not what is left of you”

I love this quote, and lets face it, after Christmas , we are probably all feeling a little bloated and in need of a little self care , plus January is actually Mental Wellness Month , so as we ring in the New Year , it is a perfect time to focus on ourselves a little . Its only when we do that, that we have the energy and patience to take care of our loved ones. We are always conscious to charge our phones up when the battery is getting low, so we need to do the same with ourselves!.

A big part of looking after ourselves is scheduling in regular workouts. I know for me, working out is as much for my mental and spiritual wellbeing as it is for my physical health.
Sometimes it can be really hard to drag yourself along to class . especially when you’ve maybe had some time off over Christmas or its so cold outside and all you really want to do is hibernate at home – we all have those days!. It Is actually on the days you really don’t feel like doing it, that you probably need it even more though!. Working out will leave you feeling so much stronger both physically and mentally , plus it will release some of those happy hormones , instantly boosting your mood. The mood boosting effects of exercise are now so widely recognised, that more and more Doctors are prescribing exercise over just handing out anti depressants , which is brilliant.

So my challenge to you this week is to get in a couple workouts – maybe get yourself along to a class or check out YouTube for some at home workouts , or get outside for a walk or run in the fresh air. Pick something you enjoy doing as you much more likely to stick with it . perhaps try a new class , one you haven’t tried before. Just get moving and honestly see how much better you feel in yourself afterwards! . You could even recruit a workout buddy , so you can keep each other accountable.

Follow along this month as I share a few more little self care tips and challenges and do let us know in the comments or pop over to our Facebook – www.facebook.com/lilmisfit1 or Instagram @littlemisfitjojo ,and let us know how you are getting on and if you are noticing any differences in your physical, and mental wellbeing.

Love lots

Autumn Love

So a lot of you guys all know I absolutely ❤ Christmas , and I really really do, (Does anyone else think they may actually be an elf?? 😂) , however my favourite season of the year is actually Autumn!. For me it just feels so magical, as the leaves begin to change , yet you still get  those September and October days with warm sunshine, then the sun starts to set early and you can get the house all cozy with candles, and snuggley blankets.   You’ve got mail is one of my all time favourite movies and it always feels like a film to watch in Autumn  , so every year at the end of September, I block out an afternoon, grab my cosiest   blankets, get myself some chocolate buttons and a huge cup of peppermint tea, and settle down to watch it.

Then before you know it Halloween is right around the corner , – and then Christmas 24 movie channel starts. and thus the whole build up to Christmas begins !!!!!! Eeeee am so excited just thinking about it 😂.

However for some – the end of summer makes them really sad. It can also be an incredibly busy time of year for people  , as you get the kids settled back into school, work is often crazy after the lull of summer and then we are rushing around getting ready for the festive season.

Autumn is the season that shows us it’s ok to let things go, and make way for the new, so this Autumn-take the time to  slow down a little, take a walk through the falling leaves, take time for you , to do the things you love to do, the things that make your Soul happy. Spend time with the people who lift your spirits and make you smile.  Do the things that you love , but often get pushed aside as we do all the things we feel we must do.  But make the time to curl with a book, or watch a movie uninterrupted  – Put that phone down!! , or pick up a colouring book and colour – it really does have a calming effect.  Or get outside in the crisp air – I’m a huge believer that exercise,  fresh air, sleep and lots of laughter are some of the best medicines.

I know it can be hard sometimes to drag yourself out of the house when it’s dark to come to class,  but you will feel better for it – honestly!

having been working a lot the past couple months , I really was feeling absolutely exhausted, so the past couple days, I took time to just relax and I honestly feel so much better for it and my creativity is coming back and I just feel my batteries are recharged and I’m ready to hit the ground running once more!.

My snuggle blanket and flamingo pillow!
Two of my favourite Autumn candles!

Orange LA Lily’s adding a touch of Autumn to my kitchen!

Its a Girlboss Life

So there I was plodding away ,quietly building the Mis-Fit empire, when my friend Michelle Rose who runs Custard and Bear Marketing   asked would I be interested in doing her marketing for Mummies course . I was like Michelle that sounds  great but I’m not a mammy, she assured me though I didn’t have to be, I just had to be a girl with a  Dream and a penchant for cake 🙂 .  Michelle  is so so lovely and always makes you feel like you can take on the world and makes anything seem possible , any Girl bosses out there running their own business, I highly recommend Michelle’s marketing for Mummies course, it really pushes you outside your comfort zone, but that is where all the Magic  happens! . She has the best catchphrase  – it doesn’t always have to be perfect just get S$it done   in otherwords, don’t just think about doing  it, just bloody go do it! . I signed up and  it was like this little door opened and  I found myself  in a community full of inspiring  Girlboss’ and it felt so amazing.  All these women, a lot of whom were mothers tired of working inflexible hours  had taken  their passion and talents  and created a small business that they could fit around their family life and find a work/life balance that worked for them.

Here are just some of the friends I’ve made along the way – though there truly are countless more .

Lulu Charles Jewellery

My Girlboss Bestie Jayne ,  fate  and our mutual friend Daneka brought  Jayne to classes.  Jayne runs Lulu Charles alongside her Husband Ashley and her dad and they make the most amazing bespoke pieces. I had gold jewellery, I had from my 18th and 21st birthdays. It held sentimental value for me, so I never wanted to sell it, but at the same time  it was just sitting in a drawer. They took that gold and made it into a Joanne necklace. I love it and wear it loads . Jayne kept me in the loop from the early design to the finished piece. They also made me a a gorgeous stacker ring recently .

We had both done Michelle’s marketing for mummies , though in seperate groups and as we became friends, we decided to join forces and help each other on our respective paths . we have regular meet ups  and just share the victories and the struggles and Jayne has become  a true Diamond friend.

Like Sadie Did

I knew sisters  Laura and Sara from my classes. Laura had been running when she spotted my bootcamp, she searched in google and got it in touch and came along to classes about 3 or 4 years ago. She started bringing her sister Sara. now their mam Judy and auntie Lesley come too! –  The universe really does seem to have a knack of bringing people together.  when Laura and Sara set up a Vintage clothes business – Like Sadie did  with their cousin Maggie, I was so excited.  I love Vintage style , (as you can probably tell if you follow me on Instagram)  .  .A lot of my outfits are from Like Sadie did.  They are doing lots of pop up events so keep your eyes peeled!   –  The clothes are gorgeous and I always get loads of compliments when I wear one of their dresses or skirts.

Vitality Pilates

Marie and Jill from Vitality Pilates,   our paths crossed at the Academy , and it was Marie I met first and she was just such a positive, genuinely  lovely person. I then met her business partner  Jill who was also really lovely and  and though we have our own individual fitness business’, we’re also working together too on a few things . Just because we’re all instructors doesn’t mean we’re in competition , we learn a lot from each other and its a brilliant example of women in business supporting each other instead of competing against each other.

Pet Lamb Patisserie

Katie and Kay from  Pet Lamb Patisserie , seriously if you are in Newcastle and fancy a sweet treat – these girls make the most amazing cakes – their salted Caramel Brownies are divine! I first came across Pet Lamb a few years back when I still worked in town, they had a little shop in the green market with Fairy Lights – you know I LOVE fairy lights and they just drew me in . They were both so friendly and  even  though now I don’t get in very often , when ever I find myself in Newcastle, I always head there for a sweet treat and they always have a friendly word and they remember what I like . They have done so amazing they had to move to a bigger shop still in the green Market and still with those all important  fairy lights , so def pop in if you are nearby.

Whilst on the marketing for mummies course I was recommended a book called 12 Lessons by Kate Spencer – it was amazing!!!. All about how what you put out in the universe, is what you get back, and how the universe will send you little signs to guide you on your path, if only you just stop, look around and listen once in a while. if you’re putting positivity, kindness and well wishes out in the universe, that is what the universe will bring back for you. if you’re all negative and why me , that is what you get back – its the law of attraction! .

I am  a bit of a bookworm , and after reading 12 lessons , Amazon then  suggested a  book called #Girlboss by Sophie Amoruso  which was so inspiring, all about Sophie’s journey from hopping from job to job and even a brief flirtation with being a fregan, to now founder and CEO of Nasty Gal – a muliti million dollar vintage clothing business in the States, a business she started from her little apartment.   After #Girlboss  I also read Girlcode by master Life coach Cara Alwill Leyba   creator of the Champagne diet.  Cara used to work at MTV and had a very stressful life , she was complaining one day about having tried so many diets, when a colleague said have you ever tried eating healthy and working out? , Cara said actually no but i also like a drink now and then. Her colleague suggested drinking champagne as it had less calories . Cara realised , that small act of holding a champagne glass made her feel special , and she deserved to feel like that all the time,    and thus The Champagne diet  was born. Its not so much about the nutrition side , its more the symbolic meaning of Champagne – its a very Glamorous drink and we associate it with celebrating. Its not even about being  girl with her own business ,  its just  about being a Girlboss of YOUR own Life!!!! . Havimg a job – employed or self employed that makes you want to get out of bed on a morning and not just wait anxiously for Friday and or pay day to come round. Life is far too short to live for just the weekends.  Create  a life that feels good on the inside, not just one that looks amazing on your social Media sites . Surrounding yourself with the people who make you feel happy, loved and supported , Positive people who  lift your spirits   . Its about  making the space around you, a  haven , I have lots of Fairy Lights in lanterns dotted around our house , it makes the house look so enchanted and cosy on winter nights – I’m just trying to convince Martin we also need some in the garden …… 🙂 .I adore    Bombay Duck and Mirabella Gift company  for the  little home touches ( my lanterns are Bombay Duck)  /   – https://www.bombayduck.com/  and  http://www.mirabellegifts.bigcartel.com/  –    Both companies are ran by fellow  Girl bosses too . Find what you love though, my mam’s house always smells gorgeous as she loves candles – it’s just creating your own little Haven with things you love.  Like Cara says in the Champagne Diet Just a few small little actions , that  inject a little glamour to everyday life. drink  your water out of a wine glass or a cup of tea out of a cup or saucer rather than a mug. Wear Clothes that make you feel a million dollars as feeling happy and content and fabulous on the inside , will reflect  out on the outside too . Throw out or donate  anything that does not make you feel anything less than fabulous . Execise – find a work out you love – a healthy body leads to a happier mental and emotional state of mind, that in turn makes it seem anything is possible – if you can dream it, you can live it!!! .

–  Cheers to all the Girlboss’ out there, creating and living their own  fabulous lives, leaving their sparkle  on the world  and those of you not quite living it yet , go create your very own Girlboss life.     -. I would love to hear your girlboss stories  – maybe you’ve treated yourself to a fabulously expensive bag or shoes, you’ve paid for yourself, or maybe it’s just as simple as getting your nails done that makes you feel glamorous and ready to take on the world girlboss style – whatever it is let me know you can find me on Instagram @llittlemisfitjojo  using the #itsagirlbosslife  Or tweet me @mis_fit1 using the same #.  💋 Xxxxx

Out with New Years Resolutions…In with Positive Intentions

Out with New Year Resolutions and In with Positive Intentions

As we prepare to say a goodbye 2015 and Welcome in  2016, for a lot of people its a time of reflection and making resolutions for the year ahead.
A New year equals a fresh start, a chance to make changes for self improvement.  Most people full of Turkey, chocolate, buffet food  and alcohol make  New Year  resolutions  , often with too many restrictions for you to actually be able to keep it up for any longer than a few weeks and lets face it  we can plan as much as we like, however life happens and can on occasion throw us a curveball which can knock us off track. Then when it all goes wrong, you can be left feeling like a total failure and just give up entirely.

So for 2016, why not try a different tact – rather than make a New year resolution, why not set yourself some Positive intentions for the year ahead.   Intentions are Positive calls to action  – something you would like to do rather than maybe something perhaps you feel you should. Its an ongoing process and leaves room for a little more flexibility especially when life throws those curve balls at you!.

so for example    Rather than say My New Years resolution is to go on a diet and  lose weight, therefore I am only going to eat Salad for the whole of January  and get up an hour earlier to do an hours workout before work  but   lets face it – who wants to eat salad in January – its freezing cold and Salad can get boring very quickly!!!!!!!!  And those dark mornings when you want to bury under the covers just for 5 minutes more…..  why not say this year   I will Love myself enough to make more healthier food choices   and move a little more . You could aim to try a new healthy food recipe  once a week , and/or set yourself a challenge to be active every day  even if its only 10 minutes on busy days –  something as simple as sticking your favourite song on and dancing around to it at home – its a cardio workout!.   Little changes all add up and just by make small changes to your nutrition and moving a little more , you’ll start to notice the positive benefits and want to keep it up  perhaps adding further challenges as you grow more confident in your journey.

or

I challenge myself to try something new   -maybe its a new hobby, experience ,book, a new type of food .

I aim to visit a place I have never visited before  -maybe its a Country / City you’ve always wanted to travel to.

So get your journal/notebook and a pen and think what would I like to happen in 2016 and write it down and keep it to hand as a daily reminder of your hopes and dreams for the year ahead .   After all its the first blank page of a 366  day year in 2016 – make it a good one!.

I’d love to hear what your Positive intentions are for 2016 !  Follow me on Twitter @mis_fit1 or Instagram @Littlemisfitjojo

Wishing you all a Wonderfully Happy and healthy New Year – may all your wishes come true xxxxx

Why the Scales are not always the best tool in your Health and Fitness Journey

How many times have you stepped on the scales, after having what you thought was a really “good” week, only to be disheartened  not to see any movement on the numbers, or even worse a change in the wrong direction???.

As a fitness instructor, this is the most common question – why after doing all this exercise am I not losing any weight or even gaining weight.

We’ve all been there. You sweated buckets and managed to avoid the temptation of the biscuit tin and the scale hasn’t even moved!, all that hard work for nothing. Except it wasn’t  – look beyond the number on the scale. Scales are not always a true indication of how healthy you are. If you work out a lot – you will probably find that actually you maybe weigh more , why? lean Muscle is why . Muscle weighs  more than fat but takes up less room. So yes the number on the scale is higher but your clothes are smaller – hurrah. plus the more muscle you have the more fat you burn.  Look at the picture below – at her heaviest weight – she actually has the leaner more toned body.

Weight-Ratio

(Thanks to Train Like Beauty for Image Use)

A lean body is gained by combining working out with  eating   clean healthy  fresh foods and Limiting the amount of processed foods, alcohol, fizzy pop, and sugar.

By all means continue to weigh yourself on occasion, but also measure yourself and just take a  look at yourself in the mirror – do you see muscle tone start to appear?, are your clothes fitting better than before? – maybe you have dropped a dress size, despite the number on the scale. Do you feel more energetic and positive? .  Do you feel fitter, stronger?, are you able to progress to the next level such as full press up? . Look beyond the scales – if you are working out and eating healthy, little changes are happening and  those little changes all add up to huge progress.
